Is it the delicately layered colours, the deliberate removal of scale or the immense size of the canvas that draws you into a Tim Maguire picture? Throughout his career Maguire has built an extensive body of awork around the proliferation of the natural world. In this choice, the artist’s subject matter remains in distinct contrast to his contemporary peers. Moving away from a focus on derision and the dissolution of traditional form, Maguire juxtaposes a modern aesthetic with traditional ideologies.

An artist drawn to the science of colour and sight, Maguire’s photorealist images are constructed by the repetitive addition and subtraction of multiple layers of primary pigment. Removing the boundaries between painting and photography Maguire obliterates visual distinctions between digital and handcrafted art. This veritable tension imbues his works with a sense of performance, creating images that are spectacularly illusionistic and cinema-like in their sense of drama.

The work currently on offer, Untitled 20070406 2007, exemplifies the artist’s ability to negotiate space and colour. The astonishing luminosity of the canvas explores the delicate membranes of its subject and idolises the primary nature of painting; aestheticism. Whether it is simply the sheer beauty of his flower works that command attention or his technical rendering, the artist’s truly contemporary aesthetic is inspiring.
